Sustainability and environmental protection through innovative medical products

In recent years, sustainability has become increasingly important in the medical industry. In particular, companies are increasingly focusing on the development and manufacture of sustainable medical products.

But what does sustainability actually mean in the medical industry? Basically, it is about minimizing the negative impact of the production and use of medical products on environment and society. This can be achieved, for example, by using more environmentally friendly materials.

However, developing sustainable medical devices is not easy and requires rethinking product development and manufacturing. Companies have to take a more in-depth look at new materials and technologies and, if necessary, establish new production processes. Finally, before market launch, the usually high approval requirements of the respective markets must be met.

Environmental protection and sustainability is a groundbreaking issue for us, the sfm medical devices group, as well as for all of our employees. In addition to the introduction of a company-wide environmental management system in accordance with ISO 14001 and the implementation of the topic into the corporate mission statement, sustainability also takes place in the development of new products.

A good example of this is our nextaro® product family. These innovative products are currently used when high-quality lyophilized active ingredients are reconstituted and are redefining the quality standard for this application. Compared to other products made of polycarbonate (PC), which are currently used on the market, sfm has deliberately chosen to manufacture them from polypropylene (PP). Compared to polycarbonate, this raw material is significantly more sustainable in terms of the important factors of production, processing and disposal.

The development and manufacture of sustainable medical products is an important step towards a sustainable medical industry. However, it requires a change in thinking on the part of companies and an intensive examination of new materials and technologies. However, investing in sustainable medical products is not only worthwhile from an ecological point of view, but will also lead to cost savings in the economic and social environment.
